Smart Tutors SHSAT

The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the sole factor required for incoming freshmen to gain admissions to eight out of the nine New York City Specialized High Schools. The only exception is the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, which requires an audition or portfolio for admission. The SHSAT is administered by the New York City Department of Education. Only New York City residents in 8th grade are allowed to take part in the exam. Students in 9th grade may also choose to take the SHSAT once again in the second round for a very limited number of seats at the Specialized High Schools.

In the SHSAT, there are 114 questions to be answered in 3 hours, 94 of which are scored and 20 which are unscored. The English Language Arts (ELA) section assesses revising/editing skills and reading comprehension. It consists of 3-4 informational texts, 1-2 literary prose texts, and 1 poem. The Math section of the exam focuses on word problems, all of which are multiple-choice.

At Smart Tutors, there are specialized tutors to teach the SHSAT. Each tutor provides one-on-one experience with each student. We provide homework, study materials, and practice exams. Each is to further prepare you and give you ideas of what the SHSAT will consist of.
